Going Back to the Gym: One Step at a Time

Aug 1, 2015

Oh the gym. My ultimate enemy! I'm part of that group of people that can gain a pound just by looking at food but can't lose one if even if I cut off a limb. Not unless I'm super serious about it. About five years ago I was at my prime thanks to spending 1.5 hours on the elliptical 7 days a weeks (yes, it was a bit excessive) and relying on a diet of vodka and baby fist fulls of food. It was extremely unhealthy but it worked, as does any diet when you're in your 20's.

Now, my body is singing a different tune. I got so used to eating heavy meals that I'm actually hungry for breakfast because I started to cut back on how much I eat for dinner and I get so tired doing laundry in my apt. I live in a 3 story condo with the washer/dryer on the bottom level and my bedroom on the 3rd so I do a lot of walking up and down stairs. But I shouldn't get tired doing that. A all! So I'm getting back to the gym and really trying to push myself into creating and sticking to a routine that I can handle.

I recently re-joined 24 Hour Fitness because it's walking distance from my apartment and already started going last week. I'm trying to work my way up to a few spin classes a week, pending my work schedule, and doing 60 minutes on the elliptical in on shot at least 5 times a week. I've gotta say, these first few days have been tough. Just using the elliptical for 30 minutes make the walk up to my bedroom dreadful. But I can't stop and I won't. I also know not to push myself.

I do plan on doing some form of exercise everyday even if it just means taking the long way to get coffee on a weekend day or attempting to do yoga--which would be good for my mind as well as my body. I've been lucky enough to finally have a steady schedule so I'm going to keep going to the gym before work on the days that I can't spin, and then force myself to work a bit late and then head on over there on the days that I can take a 7 or 8pm spin class.  I can already predict my reaction to it all: pure dread. But it's gotta be done. It all starts with one day that will turn into a week, month, and so on.

So let's see how it goes. I'm feel like I'm going to have every minute accounted for between working out regularly and spending time in the kitchen prepping my meals but it'll be all worth it and will totally make my 100 days of finding happiness so much easier when I can do laundry without wanting to collapse on my bed and fitting into my super cute clothes again.

Post Vacation 30 Day Shred

Aug 23, 2014

Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred

Here I go again. As I've mentioned before I was recently away for a month and I mostly just ate and drank my weight in carbs. A few years ago that would not have been a problem but these days it totally is! While I was away I did run on the treadmill at my cousins place a few times and went to LA Fitness for a week straight thanks to a weekly pass but I totally ignored my own membership at 24 Hour Fitness. I actually ended up putting it on hold because I didn't want to spend money on something I wasn't going to use.

Fast Forward to today though. I'm back home and need to get myself back in shape. I gain weight easy and gained 13lbs while away. EEK! The only reason I'm not freaking out over it is because I was on vacation and nothing beats bagels and pizza in NYC. Nothing.

But I'm back now and I need to get on track. I'm starting things off with a 3 day liquid diet/cleanse where I'll be drinking juices made up primarily of things that will help flush out my system and I have a roasted red pepper and tomato soup that I made to enjoy for dinner so that I don't go to bed starving. I'm also going to drink tons and tons of water as well as make my favorite detox juice with a twist: adding some dandelion tea because of it's detoxifying properties.

Today, August 23nd, I weigh 160 lbs and hope to get that down by flushing out my system and kicking my workouts into high gear. My goal is to be at my "clothes fitting weight" of 143 lbs sooner rather than later.

Day 1 of the 30 Day Shred was awful. I was only able to do 10 of the 20 minutes because my legs were burning instantly but this was after a 25 min/2 mile run so I'm not beating myself up over it. I'm sore for sure but it's going to be well worth it since I hate doing weights at the gym because everyone wants to be my trainer and I'm just not into that. I plan on doing the shred and cardio interchangeably, or together, depending on my mood.

Wish me luck guys! Posting my weight on the web only means one thing: I mean business!!!

Workout Confession Time

Jul 15, 2014
Confessions are the hardest thing to do but sometimes they're for the best.

I've been working out for weeks in preparation for my upcoming trip to NYC. Spin class, 30 day shred and hours upon hours on the elliptical. My weight has been going down--albeit slow--but my old clothes have been fitting me like a glove. I have my absolute favorite shirt dress from H&M that I purchased in 2008 that I haven't been able to wear in years. Last summer the buttons and holes were so far away from each other I didn't even know if they were aware of their purpose. Last week I was able button it all the way but didn't dare to breath but today something happened. It fit perfectly and I wasn't afraid to walk, bend or sit with it on.

I've been eating well on and off. I had ice cream for breakfast yesterday, a burrito from Chipotle a few days before and wine has been my best friend but since I've been working out I don't beat myself up over it. As long as I'm consistent with going to the gym and hopping on the elliptical for 1.5 hours a day or taking a spin class I can do all that.

Now it's time for my confession. I've wanted a boost and didn't know how to get it. Speed is out of the question, as is starvation because I love to taste food and I just won't do it so I remembered this ridiculous thing that my brother made me buy last year at Walmart when we started working out together:

Behold the sauna suit!

This is the ugliest thing in the world and I made sure to always tuck it into my socks so it wouldn't accidentally peek out of my yoga pants. I also never wore the top part because I worked out in t-shirts. This piece of plastic made me sweat so much that my socks were always soaked and forget about using the bathroom without drying myself off. I'm pretty sure I almost slid off my toilet on more than one occasion.

After using this for a few days and sweating bullets I did some research and saw nothing but negative reviews. People said it was dangerous, that the weight lost was just water weight, etc etc. But then I did some more research to find out exactly how fat left the body and discovered through many sites, including Mayoclinic.com, that it left through our urine, when we breathed and EUREKA: our sweat!

I came to the conclusion that this wasn't the worst thing ever especially if you're working out as hard as I do. If I'm not taking a spin class or doing the 30 Day Shred I push myself on the elliptical to burn 12 (machine) calories a minute which means I am working my butt off super hard for almost 90 minutes a sessions. Without using the sauna pants I was always dying, drenched in sweat, and drank 2 large ice cold Smartwater bottles during the workout. PLUS I always go to bed with two bottles of water: one for bedtime and another that I chug as soon as I am up. I am constantly drinking water just like I'm constantly burning fat which means that wearing these hideous sauna pants under my regular workout ones just help me sweat that fa out a bit quicker. And it also reminds me to drink more water!

The one I purchased was at Walmart for I don't remember how long but I figured I'd share this bit of new with the masses. I know not everyone is serious about getting in decent shape but fitting into my clothes and not feeling so lethargic all the time because of excess weight just doesn't work for me. A six pack will never be in my future because I have zero interest in never eating carbs, fatty foods or having to workout 5-7 days a week for it but it feels amazing to fit into all of my old clothes with room to eat an extra slice of pizza and not worry about losing my buttons!

Adovia Exfoliating Facial Sea Salts

Jul 13, 2014

Part of washing my face every day includes using a really good exfoliator to sloth off all the dead skin cells that will make my skin look uneven when I apply makeup. I also like to exfoliate before using serums or treatments because getting rid of excess helps the products penetrate as deep as possibly into my skin.

A few days ago I received a large jar of Exfoliating Dead Sea Salts from Adovia and I was pretty impressed with how overflowing it was. I was almost afraid to move once I opened it because I didn't want it to spill everywhere.

Now even though I exfoliate my face often I'm a bit hesitant to use this on my face. It's really just sea salt with no binder which is good and bad. Good because you can add it to whatever cleanser you have and bad because you don't want to overdo it and rub something so harsh on your face.

For this reason I've been using this for my body. I split this jar in two in order to add coffee grounds, lavender and lemongrass oil to create a super body scrub and I have to say that the results are pretty amazing. My legs are now soft 24/7 and I can really see my tan develop a lot more even than it was before I was scrubbing my legs to death with this mixture. I'm not sure if this is a product I'd ever use on my skin but it does amazing work as a body exfoliator.

***I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Detox Juice- Gotta Love Em!

Mar 27, 2013

There are so many variations of detox and cleansing drinks that are said to be the best. The Master Cleanse is an old favorite of mine as are regular detox drinks but after years of drinking some on and off I finally settled on one that I love.

Every day I take a few shots of 100% lemon juice because I know it helps cut fat and with bloat. I also always have a shot of concentrated cranberry juice or a cup of the regular variety (so long as it's 100% juice) because I've already suffered from an awful kidney incident and am paranoid. I've cut back on soda in the past few months and drink about 160 ounces of water daily so I figured why not just mix them all? I did a quick search for detox juices and found that a lot of them contain green tea because it revs up the metabolism so I decided to add it to the mix.

I have been drinking this for months and I love it. It's bitter but I haven't had sugar in coffee or tea for years so I'm used to the flavor. I've usually just made single serving mixes but since I want to drink a lot more of it I made a massive jug of it.

I don't go by a set recipe but to be safe I had the water filled up half way, used half of the cranberry juice and then a quarter of the lemon juice. I also heated up 4 cups of water and used 4 tea bags. I mixed everything together while the tea was still warm and voila. The only thing I don't like is the amount of carbs in cranberry juice but I have to ignore it since I actually need to drink lots of it.

I'm planning on always having one of these made in my refrigerator and hope that you will too! It's a nice alternative to just drinking water and it's doing something good for your body with very little effort.
