Posh v Pinch: Frizzy Hair Care Products

Apr 30, 2014

Growing up Dominican in NYC had me at the mercy of mother nature. My hair is between so many things that my window of great hair was when the air was totally dry and it was super cold. October until the beginning of March was the best timing for me and I think that's why I've developed a love for fall altogether. The other months was just awful. frizzy, puffy and consisted of every awful side effect of humidity.

Before I go on to the awesome finds let me give you a little history of my hair. I stopped relaxing it and chopped most of it all off in 2005. The few months after that were a nightmare. Hairdressers did not want to touch my hair, I couldn't manage it whatsoever and I didn't know what my issues were in order to target it correctly. Eventually I found someone that was willing to tackle my mane and guide me through which products I needed for my hair type. When wet my hair is a curly 'fro. It never goes below my shoulders and the curls are super tight. If I let it dry naturally without any combing or products then nothing can get through it. When put in rollers, blow dried and passed with a straightener it is long, sleek, thick and just amazing. It's like Jekyll & Hyde. But oh moisture. Bane of my hair's existence.

Fast forward to 2013 and I've finally figured out the best products to deal with my frizzy hair. The products I use have prices ranging from $3-$30 and I mix and match without prejudice. I will admit that I have had a few keratin treatments since 2012 but before then I found products that worked like a charm and now I will share my results with my lovely readers!

Posh- $219

I first used Coppola keratin products after my second treatment. I wanted to pamper myself and see if the pricier products really made that much of a difference. I must say that I do love how this shampoo washes products out and leaves my hair soft before the conditioner gets added.

I love love love straight hair but I do know that I have to use products that treat my curly hair, otherwise I won't be able to achieve a smooth, sleek and moisturized look. Ouidad specializes in curly hair which is why I loved this conditioner so much. Before I started doing keratin treatments and when I didn't have time to wash my hair at a salon I would air dry after using this conditioner and my hair was always silky and super soft to the touch. I was able to see a difference in the amount of frizz if I straightened a few strands without adding a smoothing product. That is a true test!

This product has become a staple in my shower due to the heavenly smell. I LOVE the smell of vanilla bean in products and this is no exception.  After I shampoo I like to sit under the dryer for about 30 minutes to let it penetrate my hair shafts before washing it off. It leaves my hair really soft and the faint scent stays with me for a few days. YUMMY!

Dry shampoo was my saviour when I was constantly working out. Back story: my hair salon in NYC is AMAZING and super inexpensive but when I was working out 3-4 days a week I couldn't afford, nor did I have time, to get my hair done more than twice a month. Sadly I sweat a ton from my scalp and that posed a huge problem until I discovered dry shampoo! I loved how I was able to absorb the post workout moisture along with the buildup that my serums and shine sprays would leave. I also liked that it didn't leave my dark hair looking like I was just baking!

Where do I begin? There is so much to love about this product that I'll try to keep it short. Whenever I apply this product on my just done hair it gives it a nice matte shine and a feeling of thickness that I crave. I can't keep my hands off my hair because I love the feeling so much. Oh and the scent is pretty amazing. A word of caution though: do not overdo it. If you don't wash your hair daily apply this product every other day, if that, to avoid it looking and feeling oily.

Pinch- $25

What I've always liked about this product is that it washed all the gel, serum and other gunk off my hair without leaving it stringy. I like that this leaves hair squeaky clean without over drying it thanks to the argon oil in it. It's definitely a great and inexpensive way to start the hair washing process. and what happens now tot he color? come on man!

2. Suave Keratin Infusion Smoothing Conditioner- $3
This conditioner is the best one I've found under $15 that is made for hair that has a keratin treatment in it or for those just wanting the smoothness that keratin can offer. I started using Suave's line of keratin infused products a few weeks before my first keratin treatment and was very happy with the results. My hair always felt really soft and moisturized after using this conditioner and I was able to actually comb through it while wet without wanting to chop it all off.

3. Infusium 23 Leave-In Treatment-Frizz Controller- $7
I've been using Infusium leave-in treatments for years because it's such a great product. Unlike lots of other leave-ins this one has a really light consistency which means it's not going to leave your hair looking greasy and weighed down as soon as you're done drying it. It adds shine without the greasiness and helps with detangling. I like to use this when I do rollers because it prevents my hair from drying too quickly before I get under the dryer.

4. Suave Professionals Keratin Infusion Dry Shampoo- $5
Most dry shampoos that I've tried have been very similar. They keep my hair from looking dull and help absorb the oil accumulated on my scalp from a hard workout. The added bonus of keratin makes this a bathroom staple. I work out 4-5 days a week and can't commit to a 3 hour hair ritual daily so this is a godsend and a great affordable alternative to the one listed above.

5. TRESemme Smooth No Frizz Shine Spray- $5
Here is one of the products that make me really happy. It's an affordable shine spray that helps get rid of frizz without leaving your hair feeling heavy or greasy. I always apply this before using my hair straightener to help keep the frizz at bay as well as right before I head out to achieve a nice silky look and feel. Since this isn't a serum or leave in conditioner it's never had an effect on my hair when I applied it wet or damp. This product does nothing to help me fight humidity in terms of keep my hair from getting puffy but I've never used it for that reason anyway.

World Market Decor Buys For Under $50

Apr 29, 2014

I've been a fan of World Market since I had to furnish a tiny Astoria apartment back in 2009. My goal at the time was to furnish it with pieces that were affordable, stood out quickly and could be placed in different types of rooms since that's how my apartment was set up. Now that I have a much larger place and work across the street from one of their retail stores I've fallen more in love with it and am constantly picking things up.

Here are some under $50 pieces that will give your space a fresh new look and help lighten it up for spring.

1. Nathan Carved Wood Wall Panels, Set of 3- $45
This set of 12"x12" carved wood panels are a great size and will fit perfectly in an entryway or accent wall.

2. Black Vintage-Style Magnet Clock- $15
This magnet vintage style clock is an affordable and useful way to add some flair in your kitchen and have a time telling device at the same time. Most smaller kitchen walls are taken up by cabinets making it hard to find a place for a clock so the fact that this is magnetic makes it really handy.

3. "Life Does Not Have To Be Perfect" Wall Decor- $35
A daily motivational reminder is never a bad thing to see when you're leaving or re-entering your apartment. This thin 3.5' distressed plank is a cute way to give yourself a much needed boost without being overpowering and cheesy.

4. Klara Antique Candlestick Table Lamp Base- $50
The Kiara Antique Candlestick Table Lamp base has enough detail to not look plain and boring but is subtle enough to fix a range of lampshades. It's a versatile piece that can be on display all year long.

5. Aqua Embossed Ceramic Canister- $8
Let's face is, us girls have small boxes, trays and containers full of small items like hair pins, quarters for laundry or small pendants that we can't afford to lose. This canister is a cute way to keep all of your small items in plain site.

6. Castelbel Fresh Cut Lavender Bar Soap- $6
This gorgeously wrapped lavender soap serves two purposes: before it's used it can be on display on your bathroom counter and then as a soothing body wash with lavender and shea butter. It's heavenly.

7. White Round Bath Mat- $13
Bath mats are usually square, oblong and boring but not this one. It's got detailed rings all around and a crochet edge that is really cute and fun.

8. Milk Bottle- $6
Vintage milk bottles can be used in every area of your apartment and the print on this ones is a nice alternative to plain ones. You can fill it up with bubble bath salts if you place it in the bathroom, with a flower (real of fake) to be displayed on a bedside table, windowsill or coffee table and in the kitchen it can be used to store freshly made nut milks or juices.

I seriously can't get enough of this store and urge anyone wanting to add some changes to their home, without everyone knowing which Target or Ikea line it came from, to check it out!

Posh V Pinch: Body Bronzer

Apr 28, 2014

Bronzers are one of those beauty items that a lot of people ignore. During the colder months they see no reason to look tanned when the sun isn't burning into their bones and when its warm it's just assumed that a day out in shorts is enough to build the perfect tan. For us ladies that like to look tanned bronzers are a perfect way to debut bare legs once the temperature rises without having to hit a tanning booth. They can also be used to highlight and draw attention to specific areas of the face and body like cheekbones, décolleté and shins to give the appearance of slimmer legs.

After years of buying and trying out bronzers here are my picks for the best bronzing lotions in two price ranges.

Posh-$32

Let's get straight to the point: this bronzer is perfection. I've tried many high end bronzers and the Lorac Tantalizer Bronzer is one I go back to time and time again. What I like the most about this bronzer is that it doesn't leave me looking like I got glitter bombed. This product is easy to apply and comes out thin enough to apply evenly without dripping. Another plus about this product is that it doesn't leave my legs looking shiny and wet like other high end bronzer that I've tried. It also doesn't melt off or leave stains on everything my skin touches once it's fully dry. It's not a huge tube for the price but if you're looking for something subtle but noticeable and have a bit more to spend this is the bronzer for you.

Pinch-$11

L'Oreal's Sublime Bronze line has been a favorite of mine for many years. I discovered them when I was learning about skin care, skin tones, etc. and realized that the reason I always looked like the undead even though I have dark skin was because of my yellow undertone. The Sublime Bronze face and body bronzers helped me develop a love for a sun kissed glow! Fast forward to today and I'm still using them. The Luminous Bronzer is a great two in one because it'll help you develop a tan over time while giving you an instant glow. It has a bit more shimmer than LORAC's bronzer but is just as lasting and once fully dry it doesn't rub off on your clothes or anything else.
When I want to apply a bronzer, which is every time I know I'll be baring my arms and legs, I make sure to exfoliate my skin beforehand with my mix of Neutrogena's Body Clear Body Scrub and Ole Henriksen's Rub N' Buff Salt Scrub and purchased one of these foot wands specifically for using the brush part to make sure the Salicylic Acid and the essential oils of both products penetrate my skin. When my skin is nearly dry I mix my bronzer of choice with my body lotion and I'm left perfectly bronzed and moisturized.

The Beauty Scenario

Apr 27, 2014
I came across this while check out my friend Dayana's blog, Everything Beauty and Beyond, and decided do it. Here are my answers to some pressing beauty scenarios!

1. You have to get rid of all your foundations and you can only keep one high end and one drugstore, which do you keep?

2. You go for an interview and the lady interviewing you has lipstick on her teeth. Do you approach the subject or ignore it completely?
It would depend on if I can pretend it happened during the interview. like if she took a drink, licked her lips, etc. And also depending on how nice she was.

3. You're not feeling yourself and need a pick me up. Which lipstick do you put on to make yourself feel beautiful?
My favorite lip plumper: Too Faced Lip Injection!

4. You go back in time for a day to your teenage years, how would you do your hair and makeup differently?

I would have dyed my hair deep purple like I always wanted to and I would keep my makeup the same. I only really wore lipstick until my junior year when I started to wear eyeshadow. Cant believe I remember when I started wearing eyeshadow!

And I think I may finally just try to deep purple. Why not, right?

5. You ask your hairdresser for a shoulder length Pixie Lott hair cut, but they hear wrong and give you a pixi cut. Do you a) Smile, say thank you, leave and call your mum hysterical b) Cry in the chair and things get awkward or c) Complain to the manager and demand a refund.

It wouldn't get that far because I micromanage every snip to death.

6. Your friend surprises you with a 4 day city break and you have 1 hour to pack. Which 'do it all' palette do you pack in your makeup bag?

I don't really own too many palettes that I'm gaga over so I'd have a makeup bag for sure but I'm not loyal to any specific palette.

7. Your house has been robbed, don't worry everyone is safe, but your beauty stash has been raided. What's the product you really hope is safe?

My foundation primer: Philosophy's The Present.

8. Your friend borrows your makeup and returns it in awful condition. Do you a) Just pretend you haven't noticed b) Ask them to repurchase it or c) Secretly do the same to something of theirs

B. I would just let them know when would be a good time for her to buy me a drink and drop off a brand new [whatever she destroyed].

At Home Microdermabrasion

Apr 26, 2014

Spring is in the air and that means it's time to sloth off all signs of winter from our bodies and especially our faces. This year I decided to give my wallet a break and get back into at home microdermabrasion kits. In the past I've used one from L'Oreal as well as one specifically from their Garnier Nutritioniste line but those have been discontinued long ago and I haven't been able to find a replacement that I was happy with until recently.

I've thought about getting the Clarisonic because I've heard nothing but good things about it but the cost was always a deterrent. It's something I will still eventually work my way to purchasing but for now I wanted something more affordable as an at home treatment. The Neutrogena Microdermabrasion System was on sale at drugstore.com for $16 a few weeks ago so I decided to give it a try. I had read some reviews about it and it seemed like it was just what I was looking for: a deeply penetrating exfoliant that would leave my skin super smooth and sloth off any dryness, dead skin cells and help my minor scars (from picking at my face-I know, I know...) fade quickly since I like to wear the least amount of makeup possible in the spring/summer.

I have to admit that when I opened the box I was not impressed. The tool itself isn't very large and the fact that it vibrated instead of rotating left me a bit skeptical before and during my first use. The instructions are fairly easy: remove one of the puffs, press it onto the Velcro type attachment head, wet it and then attach the head to the applicator and begin. The puff seems unimpressive but it has a lot of product in it. I was surprised that I was able to massage each section of my face, plus under my chin, for 2-3 minutes and never ran out of the product. As a matter of fact after I was satisfied that I exfoliated every reachable part of my face I removed the puff from the applicator and was able to exfoliate the sides of my nose. When it was time to rinse the product off I had the strangest feeling in my face. It was as if the water was just sliding off like a really light cream. I resisted the urge to follow it up with my Ole Henriksen African Red Tea Foaming Cleanser because I wanted to give this an honest try.

Once my face air dried I applied my moisturizing foundation and went on with my day thinking that I had just spend $15 on a product that I was either going to use just for fun or return when halfway through my day I finally had a chance to check myself out and was blown away. My skin looked amazing. Thanks to the lightness of Laura Mercier's Tinted Moisturizer I never look like I have makeup on but this was something out of this world. I was so surprised and in love with my reflection that I asked my coworkers if they noticed how amazing my skin looked but they don't pay attention to the tiny details so while they could tell me that it did in fact look amazing they couldn't do a proper comparison.

Now that I've been using the product every other day for two weeks I notice a major difference in how my skin feels after my morning and evening wash even when I'm not using it. The only downside that I see from this product is that it doesn't come with a case to store the puffs in for an additional use because I think there's so much product that it can be good for more than one use. This might just mean that after I fully exfoliate my face I should use this on my legs before I apply my bronzers.

Drugstore Buys Worth Checking Out

Apr 3, 2014
I famously mocked drugstore cosmetics for many many years before brands like Wet n Wild Cosmetics stepped up their game but I always loved getting other beauty products at my local Duane Reade. Here is a list that Allure Magazine compiled of the Top 21 Drugstore Buys. My favorite new purchase from this list is

Neutrogena's Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle Cream SPF 15. I've been using it for a few weeks as a daytime alternative to my retinol cream by Philosophy and am really liking the results so far.

Check out the list and let me know your thoughts. Of course this only means that now I'm inspired to check out my medicine cabinet and drawers to determine what drugstore items I find myself purchasing repeatedly!

Spring 2014 Essentials

Apr 1, 2014

Spring is finally here which means it's time to lighten up our wardrobes. Every color can be worn in any season, like winter whites and summer darks, but lightening the fabrics and adding some floral patterns are the key to a perfect spring/summer wardrobe.

As gothy as I am my favorite pattern to start wearing when the tights come off are florals. They pretty much exude spring and help be start the season fresh and fun. Paired with linen, lace or light cotton and it's the perfect thing to wear when the weather starts to cool down.

Floral shoes, like the satin peep toe pumped by Ted Baker , may seem intimidating at first but paired with a light dress and white blazer and everyone will wish they were bold enough to purchase a pair. To keep warm during the chilly spring nights a white blazer, similar to this H&M Single Breasted Blazer, is enough to keep you stylish and warm. Finally we have a piece in one of my favorite colors from last spring that is with us yet again: a mint fit and flare skirt. This mini trumpet skirt by Miss Selfridge screams spring and is just waiting to be worn with a lace tank, strappy sandals or wedges and a love of spring!

If you're having trouble with this winter to spring transition that we're having and would like some help drop us a line at The Closet Fashionista and if you're in NYC or LA we can personally help you make sense of your available options.
